Happy Summer!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Another year has come to a close and what a busy one it was!  Time seems to have slipped by so quickly, yet when I think of some of the events from the fall, they seem years ago.  I hope that your child enjoyed his/her grade five year with the projects, activities and learning that we did.  I think this year will go down as “the year of rescheduled field trips”.  Four of our five trips were rescheduled for one reason or another.  We seemed to be playing “catch up” for most of the year so students are encouraged to push themselves harder heading into next year.  Time management is an essential skill in today’s world of instant information!  Rest assured knowing your child is in good hands next year with Mrs. Bellamy or Ms. Ly.  To those who may be moving on to new schools, I wish you the best of luck wherever you may land.

If you have not already done so, please get the year end video clips from the blog as soon as possible.  I will likely remove the files after Canada Day.

I’ve always been a strong supporter of year-round schooling because the summers off aren’t needed like they used to be in the olden days.  Two months of inactive learning can result in plenty of learning loss by the time students return to school in September.  Since year-round schooling is likely still a long way off,  I encourage you to keep your child learning over the summer by reading (lots of reading) and practising the basics in math and writing.  If you’re travelling over the summer, try to make a learning moment of it; pick up some history or consider a vacation journal.  For those who’d like to see their child do “paper work” over the summer, I highly recommend the Summer Smart series, which is available at Chapters and Costco.  It has a variety of Ontario Curriculum related activities and helps limit that learning loss over the summer (and the answer key is included at the back for you to check your child’s work).

Thank you for the cards, gifts and warm wishes, very much appreciated.  I wish everyone a safe and happy summer.  The blog will be here all summer long so don’t hesitate to check in and leave me a comment about what you’re up to.  Best wishes!
