Season’s Greetings

What a great day to end the first part of our school year!  We had a lot of fun (despite starting the day with a pair of tests) and enjoyed the Secret Santa gift exchange.  I could tell that a lot of time and effort went into preparing these gifts for the recipients and there was much delight in opening the presents.  Photos from the gift exchange are below.

I want to thank all the parents and families for the gifts (not necessary but certainly appreciated) and warm holiday wishes.  Should you be traveling this holiday season, have a great time and travel safe; if you’re staying close to home, enjoy the fun of family and friends.  The Mephams wish you all the best for the holiday season.  We’ll see you back at school on January 3rd.

Memoir Writing

Dear Parents,

As was mentioned in the December newsletter, we are embarking on an exciting writing journey.  For the next couple of months, we’ll be writing memoirs; short, memorable moments from our past.  The end task for this unit will be a class magazine titled “Our Classroom”.

WE need your assistance with this as many of your child’s memories might already be forgotten by them.  In the next several days, expect him/her to ask you about both positive and not-so-positive moments in his/her ten-year history.  Currently, we’re constructing an illustrated timeline of our lives – both good and bad moments.  He/she will probably ask you about some of those early moments that could go in the timeline.

Before the holiday break, we’ll also be brainstorming some “story starters”, again, based on your child’s memories.  These do not have to be big complex ideas, rather simple, memorable moments.  For example, a childhood snowball fight; a “first” event (like a goal, step or tooth); an embarrassing moment, etc.   Bigger moments like a far away trip, an accident, or awards won are also welcome.  Since your child is only 10 years old, he/she is going to need help jogging his/her brain.  There are a lifetime of memories to share in those 10 years, he/she might need that push to get the brainstorming going.

Thank you in advance for your support with this.  More details will follow as we walk through this journey together.  Check back for updates in the New Year.  You can also “subscribe” to this thread by checking the box at the bottom of the page (FYI).
